Medical device manufacturing often depends on very small components with very demanding material requirements. Tight tolerances, controlled mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and consistent performance can all influence how reliably a component can be produced.
At Avocet Precision Metals, we support medical manufacturers with precision metals suited to specialist applications, helping customers source materials that meet both technical requirements and the practical demands of production.
Precision Metals for Medical Manufacturing
For medical manufacturers, choosing the right material involves more than selecting an alloy.
Dimensions, temper, surface condition, edge quality and consistency can all affect how a material behaves during forming, joining and assembly. This becomes especially important when components are extremely small or manufactured to tight tolerances.
We can support requirements across a range of product forms, including:
- Precision strip and foil
- Fine and flat wire
- Shaped wire and specialist profiles
- Medical braid and coil wire
- Precision thin-wall tubing
- Materials for bellows and other formed components
These materials can support applications including catheters, surgical instruments, implants and other specialist medical assemblies.
Helping Reduce Production Problems
Small variations in material can create bigger manufacturing problems.
Inconsistent thickness, width or mechanical properties can affect production repeatability, increase inspection requirements and contribute to scrap or downtime. Our role is not simply to supply material against a specification. We work with customers to understand how the material will be processed and what the finished component needs to achieve.
This can help identify the right combination of alloy, dimensions, material condition and product form before issues appear further into production.
Specialist Wire for Catheter Applications
Catheter manufacturing is a good example of where precision matters. Through our partnership with Ulbrich of Austria, we can support requirements for medical braid and coil wire used in catheter applications. Depending on the design, manufacturers may require round, flat or shaped wire in carefully controlled dimensions and specialist alloys.
Access to these capabilities allows customers to discuss specific requirements rather than being limited to standard wire products.
Strip, Foil and Tubing for Medical Components
Medical applications can also require precision strip, foil and thin-wall tubing. Strip and foil can be used for small formed components where dimensional accuracy, surface condition and mechanical performance are important. Precision tubing may be required where diameter, wall thickness and material consistency need to be tightly controlled.
For the customer, the challenge is often not simply finding the material. It is finding it in the correct form, condition and quantity for the application.
Supporting Development and Production
Medical products often begin with development quantities before moving into regular production. During the early stages, engineers may need to evaluate different alloys, dimensions or material conditions. Once the design is finalised, priorities shift towards consistency, repeatability and dependable supply. We can support customers through both stages, helping source material for development while also considering how requirements may change as the programme grows.
This can be particularly valuable for manufacturers dealing with long lead times, unusual specifications or materials that are difficult to source through standard stockholders.
Meet Us at Medical Technology Ireland
We’ll be discussing these challenges at Medical Technology Ireland Expo and Conference, taking place on 23–24 September 2026 at Galway Racecourse.
Avocet Precision Metals will be exhibiting alongside our partners from Ulbrich of Austria, giving visitors an opportunity to discuss precision wire, strip, foil and other specialist metal requirements with both teams. If you’re developing catheters, surgical instruments, implants, bellows or another medical component and have a material or supply challenge, we’d be pleased to discuss how we can support your application.
You can book a meeting with Avocet Precision Metals and Ulbrich at the show here:
